Alcoholic vs Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver – Know the Difference

Fatty liver disease is becoming increasingly common in Varanasi, and many patients are confused about the difference between Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Both conditions involve excess fat buildup in the liver, but the causes and management approach can differ.

 Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD)

This condition develops due to regular or excessive alcohol consumption. Over time, continued alcohol intake can lead to liver inflammation, scarring, and even cirrhosis if not addressed early.

 Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

This occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is commonly linked to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders, and a sedentary lifestyle. Poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity are major contributors.

 Early Symptoms May Include:

Persistent fatigue

Mild discomfort or heaviness in the upper abdomen

Unexplained weight changes

Abnormal liver function test reports

In many cases, fatty liver shows no obvious symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular health checkups are important. With timely diagnosis and lifestyle guidance, fatty liver can often be reversed, especially in the early stages.
