Gastroenterologist in Varanasi: The Real Truth About Spicy Food & Ulcers.

In our vibrant city of Varanasi, we love our food full of flavor and spice. From the morning kachori sabzi to the evening chaat, a bit of 'teekha' is a part of our culture. But many of us live with a nagging fear: is this love for spicy food harming our stomachs?

As a Gastroenterologist in Varanasi, my name is Dr. Saumyaleen Roy, and this is one of the most common questions I hear. It’s time we talk about it openly and clear up this confusion

.

Let me put it simply: Spicy food does not cause a Peptic ulcer.

Think of it this way: if you have a wound on your hand and put chili on it, it will burn. The chili didn't create the wound, but it certainly made it hurt. It's the same with your stomach. Spicy food can irritate an existing ulcer and worsen your Stomach pain, but it is not the original culprit.

So, What is the Real Cause of Ulcers?

The main reasons for ulcers are medical, not dietary. They are:

  1. H. pylori infection: This is a type of bacteria that can live in the gut and damage the protective Stomach lining, allowing an ulcer to form

  2. Long-Term Painkiller Use (NSAIDs): Regularly taking certain common painkillers can also weaken this protective lining over time.

This explains why you might need ongoing Acidity treatment or even specialized GERD treatment in Varanasi for that frequent burning feeling, even after you've stopped eating spicy food. The underlying problem is still there.

Your Gut health is incredibly important for your overall well-being. Persistent stomach pain and frequent acidity are not normal. It’s your body telling you that something needs attention. Relying on home remedies might give temporary relief, but it won't fix the root cause.

Living with daily discomfort should not be your reality. The first step to feeling better is getting the right diagnosis from a specialist.

If you are concerned about your digestive health, please seek professional medical advice. For a consultation to discuss your concerns, you can book an appointment to see me, Dr. Saumyaleen Roy.
